New yorkers are not impressed, this was posted on a NY message board June 13, 2008 when the initial shock set in of this ny staple being covered in a gloomy gray paint coating. At this point no one knew what would replace the famous DKNY ad.

KenNYC: "on Broadway and Houston is now gone. Or rather, painted over. Gray. Am I the only one that feels like this is a damn shame? Fine, I know, it's "just an advertisement", but a spectacular one, and it has been around for more than 20 years. An amazing depiction of NY skyline with the towers still standing. I'm going to miss it. Every single visitor I've had over here who has walked past it has found it to be absolutely amazing, numbers of people taking their pictures in front of it etc. Kinda foolish to be missing an advertisement I guess, but it was amazing. Gray isn't all that amazing "

Then this happens...

Hollister?! Really? Hollister? Shaking my head! These surfer dudes and their dimly lit and highly perfumed stores are taking over.

A 'sign' of the times indeed.
