CLASSIC MATERIAL: DJ THREAT'S TAKE IT TO THE STREETS MIXTAPE (2001)

This Mixtape marks a time when mixtapes were at their peak. DJ Threat had just landed THE gig on Hot97 alongside Green Lantern, DJ Camilo, and DJ Kay Slay as the original Taking it to the Streets late-night crew. Each DJ would play once a month for a 4-hour shift, a shift that replaced DJ Enuff's Midnight Run (upon his promotion to Morning Show/Rush hour.) DJ Threat kicked off the first week Taking it to the Streets series, about the fourth or fifth appearance was how this mixtape came about.

Like every week, after the show Threat would hit a couple clubs and drive back to Long Island to spend the rest of the weekend with family. Every Sunday, Me, Threat and LJ would take a trip to the movies and see whatever was playing: Eyes Wide Shut, Cast Away, The Mummy, anything lol. I had just recorded the Taking it to the Streets show on cassette the night before (as I had always done for the Midnight Run when Enuff would let him spin), so after the movie would take a scenic ride along the south shore while head-bopping away to his mix. I commented: "Yo Threat this mix is a head banger, you should put this out as a mixtape, like ASAP!"

A week later, He was killed in a motorcycle accident. LJ pulled me aside of the grieving mourners and pulled out this mixtape (with artwork and all) from DJ Threat's backpack...

Take a listen below, download it, let me know what you think.
