FRESH CUT : "UPPER EGYPT" - OFF THE ROOTS "DILLA JOINTS" INSTRUMENTATION COMPILATION

Although I admit I've never paid attention to Dilla when he was alive or posthumously followed nor understood the fan fare behind him, I can appreciate this tribute and can respect the musical dedication to the infectious sounds Dilla illustrates on each track he was affiliated with. But what the Roots have done on this instrumentation of the Late-Great-Dilla is one that comes close to home.

Touching on my Jazz roots of watching videos of my father playing with Tito Puente. Those 20+ years he was on tour with the legend listening to this mixtape brings me back to those days where I'd slap away on my dad's conga drums while he was out of town. Imagining full songs and how they would sound with my (clumsy) percussion as I'd feverishly bite my lips in concentration. The sounds I imagined are what Questlove of The Roots does expertly and effortlessly on this compilation of Dilla Joints. Below is my favorite example, Upper Egypt. Enjoy.
